Overview

Beginning January 1st, 2010, dog licensing in the State of Delaware will no longer be administered by the State; administration will be at the County level. Residents of Kent County will need to obtain dog licenses from the Kent County SPCA (KCSPCA).

Previously issued State administered dog licenses will remain valid. You will not be required to obtain a new County license until the current State license expires.

Special Service Dogs (seeing eye, lead or guide dogs, or dogs that have previously served in a branch of the United States Armed Forces) must be licensed but are exempt from the licensing fee.

Requirements

  • Licenses are issued for each calendar year (beginning January 1st and ending December 31st).
    • Example: A license purchased in April still expires on December 31st.
  • All dogs 6 months of age or older must be licensed.
  • All licenses MUST be obtained by March 1st. Licenses issued after March 1st will have an additional late fee imposed.
    • By law, you have 60 day grace period for obtaining a license which means that all licenses must be obtained by March 1st.
  • Each dog being licensed must have a current rabies vaccination at the time the license is issued.
    • A license will NOT be issued beyond the date of expiration of the rabies vaccination.
